Ottawa Families Invited to Explore the World of Plants at Free Plant Science Saturday Event

Hands-on discovery event kicks off Plant Biology 2026, welcoming more than 1,200 plant scientists from around the world to Canada’s capital

Families across the Ottawa region are invited to discover the fascinating world of plants during Plant Science Saturday, a free, hands-on community event taking place on Saturday, July 18, at the Main Street Market in Grande Allée Park.

Held immediately before Plant Biology 2026, the joint annual meeting of the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) and the Canadian Society of Plant Biologists/La Société Canadienne de Biologie Végétale (CSPB/SCBV), Plant Science Saturday brings internationally recognized plant scientists directly into the community to inspire curiosity and celebrate the importance of plants in our everyday lives.

More than 1,200 scientists, researchers, educators, and students from around the world will gather in Ottawa for Plant Biology 2026 to share the latest scientific discoveries and innovations addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including climate change, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and global food security.

Before the scientific conference begins, many of those researchers will volunteer their time to engage local families through interactive exhibits and activities designed for children and learners of all ages.

Attendees can:

  • Participate in hands-on plant science activities
  • Meet scientists from around the world
  • Learn how plants grow, communicate, and adapt
  • Discover how plant science contributes to healthier communities and a more sustainable future
  • Explore careers in science and research

Plant Science Saturday is designed to make science accessible, engaging, and fun while helping young people understand the vital role plants play in feeding the world, protecting ecosystems, and addressing global environmental challenges.
