Kicking off Plant Biology 2019 in San Jose, CA, seventy PUI-associated folks participated in a half-day workshop focused on designing undergraduate research projects to increase the probability of subsequent publication and broad dissemination. Twenty-seven attendees received travel awards from a NSF-funded conference grant. A panel of five faculty associated with PUIs, two of whom were scientific journals editors, served as panelists for a discussion of challenges to producing publishable data and navigating the publication process. Small group discussions followed, centered around four themes: research planning and design, journal selection, manuscript writing strategies, and editing and revision. Participants interacted with a diverse array of PUI-associated plant biologists to discuss roadblocks, share strategies to achieve success, and develop a plan to better facilitate publication in their research programs.
