Twitter Honorable Mention

The image shows Palo Verde (most likely blue palo verde) tree in full bloom with its characterstic gorgeous yellow flowers. Palo Verde is the state tree of Arizona and the designation was officially sanctioned by the State Legislature in 1954. In Spanish, the name of the tree means “Green Stick”. This tree truly reflects what it takes to survive in harsh conditions of the Sonoran desert: low water and high temperature. The bark is photosynthetic and nearly performs 75% of the photosynthesis by this plant. They produce very small leaves to minimize water loss via transpiration.
