ASPB Signs Letter to Eliminate Barriers to FDA’s Draft Guidance on Gene Editing

On April 19, 2022, the Ag Biotech Alliance, of which ASPB is a member, sent a letter to key members of Congress to include in the Fiscal Year 2023 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies (Agriculture) Appropriations bill to provide the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the necessary resources to develop and publish for public comment its draft guidance on how its regulatory policy for foods derived from new plant varieties applies to foods from plants produced using genome editing.

Members of the Alliance have been pursuing this draft guidance for years, and a recent barrier cited by FDA has been insufficient resources to publish this rule. The Alliance proposed an appropriations request letter that would give FDA funding to eliminate this barrier.
