Celebrate Herstory: Nominate Inspiring Women in Plant Biology for Recognition!

Blog by Rebecca Roston, Chair, ASPB Women in Plant Biology Committee

In honor of US Women’s History Month, the Women in Plant Biology Committee of the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) is thrilled to celebrate the remarkable women who have shaped and continue to shape our field. We’re calling on YOU to nominate exceptional women plant scientists, both past and present, for recognition by the ASPB community.

Why Nominate?

Despite their invaluable contributions, women remain underrepresented in leadership positions and awards within plant biology. This recognition opportunity aims to:

  • Shine a spotlight on the extraordinary achievements of women in plant biology. By recognizing their pioneering work, groundbreaking research, and leadership, we inspire future generations and dismantle gender bias in the field.
  • Celebrate the diverse impact of women in plant biology, both nationally and internationally. From historical figures who paved the way to rising stars shaping the future, we want to acknowledge the breadth and depth of their contributions.
  • Build a more equitable and inclusive plant biology community. Recognizing and celebrating women’s achievements sends a powerful message that inclusivity and diversity are valued within ASPB.

We encourage nominations for:

  • Historical figures: Women who made significant contributions to plant biology in the past and continue to inspire us today.
  • Present-day trailblazers: Women currently making waves in plant biology through their research, teaching, outreach, or other endeavors.

It’s easy to nominate! Simply submit the nominee’s name, affiliation, and a brief description of their contributions through this link. All nominated women plant scientists will be featured on the ASPB website, with duplicate nominations aggregated. Please note: Living nominees must accept the nomination to be posted.

Personal Reflections on Inspiring Mentors

As a graduate student at UC Davis, I had the privilege of learning from incredible women like Dr. Judy Callis, whose kindness and excellence in teaching set a high standard, Dr. Li Tian, who bravely balanced her family and career during her tenure track, and Dr. Katie Dehesh, who inspired me to embrace my own strength and potential.

During my post-doctoral research at MSU, I was inspired by Dr. Eva Farre, who passionately juggled her lab and family, Dr. Leslie Kuhn, who elevated my skills in structural biochemistry, and Dr. Susanne Hoffman-Benning, whose dedication to science and her family left a lasting impression.

As an early faculty member, I received invaluable mentorship from Dr. Sally McKenzie, who taught me the intricacies of managing large research projects, and Dr. Karin van Dijk, who instilled in me the importance of effective teaching.

These are just a few examples of the many remarkable women whose kindness, excellence, and examples have guided and inspired me throughout my career. Their stories are testaments to the power and diversity of women’s contributions to plant biology.

Together, let’s celebrate the herstory of remarkable women in plant biology and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for the field. Nominate a deserving woman today!
