Photo Contest Rules and Conditions

Please read the following carefully to understand the rules and guidelines.

Photo Categories

  1. Science – the inner workings of plant biology (microscopy, laboratory, growth chamber, herbarium collections, etc.) & the people who make it happen
  2. Agriculture – fields, orchards, farming, planting, etc.
  3. Gardens – flowers, vegetables, landscaping, urban oases, etc.
  4. Nature – forests, fields, mountains, riparian…as long as plants are the star
  5. Plant products—things humans derive from plants (clothing materials, medicine, furniture, biodiesel, paper products, cosmetics)
  6. Macro/Micro shots – close up shots of plant tissue and cells

Artistic Guidelines

  1. A specific, focused, and close up image is better than a grand landscape, murky tone or cluttered scene. If an image is distinctly suited for just one particular category (see above) then it probably hits the right mark.
  2. Know what’s in your image. Provide the details. The most intriguing microscopic view of a ‘purple flower’ is less competitive than a ‘30X magnification of a Delphinium elatum sepal.’
  3. Images must be family friendly (e.g. SafeSearch compatible in Flickr).
  4. Still photos are required. Try to make them more mesmerizing than stagnant with clarity, depth of field, etc.
  5. Imagery is art. So if you’re truly confident in your photo’s artistry and clear message, you may diverge from guideline #1.

 Contest Rules

  1. Photos must be original and submitted by or on behalf of the photographer and with the photographer’s direct consent.

  1. Rule 7 (Photographers must reside full-time in the United States or US territories) is a discrimination. ASPB is a wider territory!
