Beall Elementary, a Fascinating Update

As part of Fascination of Plants Day, over 60 1st grade students at Beall Elementary School in Frostburg, MD were treated to hand-on activities centered on how plants use their senses to explore and respond to their environment. The budding scientists were asked to voice and write their ideas about whether or not plants can tell “up” from “down” and what cues plants might use to make their decision. Then the 1st-graders set up a test to see if plants that were placed on their side or upside down could change the way they grew in order to right themselves.

In addition to their experiment, students explored how plants are used every day as food, fiber, clothes, medicine, and decorations.

The activities were led by ASPB member David Puthoff who is also a faculty member in the Department of Biology at Frostburg State University.
